Hello everybody,

This is Carmen from Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums.

Our beloved saxophonist since 1996, Scott Edog Petersen, will soon undergo a double lung transplant.

Some of you may know that Scotty suffers from the congenital disease cystic fibrosis, or simply, CF. But many of you may have never guessed, because of Scott’s awesome musicianship - the cat can really blow the saxophone! I don’t want to sound like I’m writing his obituary, but against all odds Scott has made a successful career as a saxophonist despite his medical hurdles and the uncertainty of the music business. He was the lead tenor soloist for years in the late legendary jazz drummer J.C. Heard’s band, which led to many Midwest gigs with Dizzy Gillespie. In addition to performing with famous B3 organists Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, Lonnie Smith and Bill Heid, Scotty excels in the pop realm as well, performing with Aretha Franklin, the Four Tops, Burt Bacharach and the Temptations. Don’t stop there – the Dog can get awfully funky too, performing and recording with soul singers Howard Tate and Bettye Lavette. He’s been an arranger – writing for blues act Jonnie Bassett to works by Bach and Debussy for the Bishop St. Saxophone Quartet - as well as a college lecturer of jazz history and instructor of jazz saxophone. Scott moved to the Bay Area from the Midwest, and he’s currently a featured soloist in our bands (since 1996), Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums and our Hammond Cheese Combo, when he’s not on the road with other acts including the Stan Kenton Alumni Orchestra, or one of Mike Vax's big bands, or playing in town with just about everybody including Lavay Smith & the Red Hot Skillet Lickers.

The time has come for the double lung transplant and we expect nothing but more success & humor from Scotty. The operation requires him to remain within 30 minutes of UCSF in San Francisco for a period of about 6 weeks following the surgery. Because he lives farther away in Marin County, Scott is looking for a place in San Francisco, or preferably in Southern Marin County, where he can stay close to his home but also close to the Hospital in case of complications. If you know of a home for rent, please let us know. The downside is, now that Scott has officially been added to the transplant waiting list as of several weeks ago, there will only be about 24 hours notice before he goes in for surgery. His new set of lungs could arrive tomorrow or 6 months from now. Immediately after surgery he will remain in the hospital for a period of one to three weeks barring complications. After all of that, he would need to move in to a place within the 30 minute drive radius. So you can see the difficulty in securing a place, when he can’t tell potential landlords exactly what dates he will need it.

Many people have asked what can they do to help Scotty Dog?

1) If anyone has the skills to set up a webpage for donations, that would be so welcome!
2)We'd love to have a page for him on our website, luckylounge.com,
3) and also a myspace.com page where folks can leave well wishes for Scott and Scott or others can update everyone on his condition.

Though Scott has friends and family who are traveling across the country to pitch in and care for him, musicians generally don’t receive disability or sick pay. When we don’t work, we don’t get paid. We plan on doing a benefit show (details below), but frankly, more money can be made for Scotty, and more quickly, through direct donation, and hopefully we can do this with a link to paypal from a webpage -
4) anyone know what's required to set up a paypal account for donations - is it free?

We really don’t know when Scott will be able to go back to work, but at best it will be several months, maybe 6 months post surgery, maybe more. And since he's been officially added to the transplant waiting list, he has not been allowed to travel by airplane, nor to travel more than 3 hours or so from San Francisco. This means he's been turning down lots of work because essentially he can't go on the road, not even to L.A. or Northern California.

5) If you do know of a place Scott could rent for a month or 6 weeks on short notice, let us know! He could get a hotel room, but a space with a kitchen and less traffic would be so much nicer to help Scotty heal. Not too mention he has to limit his exposure to germs, since the anti-rejection drugs he’ll have to take to protect the foreign lungs have the downside of lowering the body’s ability to mount an immune defense against infection. This place would need to accommodate Scotty and his caregiver.

6) Come to this benefit dance concert!! And spread the word. Scott is such an outgoing, talkative guy, he has many of his own personal fans who come out to shows specifically to hear him and hang out with him. Please spread the word so these folks can find out about Scotty.

Burnie you are awesome!

That's a fantastic idea! I'll contact you about details. We'll either have a raffle or an auction.

If anyone can think of anything else to donate for raffle or auction items that might appeal to dancers and/or jazz/music lovers...a date with your bad self....?

By the way, I just talked to Scotty, and if he hasn't undergone surgery yet, he'll be there. He was performing in George Gee's band last week. He's a long time pal of their lead trumpet player and sometime vocalist Walt S.

thanks again,
Carmen

Old bud Scotty was swingin' the baritone and his arse off with the Jump, Jivin' Wailers last week for the 920 Special! Trumpeter Walt Szymanski and Scotty are long time friends and bandmates from their Detroit days. Scotty has swung with us many times in the past, including dates at The Derby, Catalina and home in NYC.

Carmen, please let us know what we can do to be part of this, would GG CD's be any help?

Good luck, Scotty!

Hey there George,

I heard you guys tore the roof off in San Francisco! Wish I could have been there!

That is SO kind of you to offer. I think if you would like to donate CDs, that would be a great idea! People LOVE your band!

The audience we're trying to attract by having a dance concert with both Lavay Smith's band, and our Rhumba Bums, plus countless jazz musicians who are friends/peers of Scotty's who want to sit in, at a venue with a big dance floor which regularly books both our bands and many other dance bands, are exactly those people who love to dance and love swing, jazz, blues, big band etc. (and they also often like to extend a helping hand).

In other words, I think your CDs would most definitely help draw fans in to the show!

We're working on trying to get gift certificates from other venues which regularly host swing dancers and music lovers.

Ideas anyone?

Thank you George!!!

Please send CDs to:

Subject: Housing & Website for Scott

Hey guys,

I sent a message back from Swingtalk but it might have been eaten by a spam filter. Here's what I can offer:

Housing - I've got a spare bedroom/bathroom in the Upper Haight (near Haight and Baker) in my appartment (2br/2ba) that Scott could use for two months. The only catch is that I have a cat and I don't know if that would create problems for someone on antirejection drugs/immunosuppressants.

Web Site - I'm happy to create a simple blog site. It makes posting updates and pictures as easy as filling out a form. I can also help him out if he wants to grab his own domain name ("edogmusic.com"?).

Cheers,
Clark

Yippee!

DJ Jesse Miner has offered his services!

www.jesseminer.com

Fantastic!

Now if we could get some hot dance instructors who could help the draw to volunteer! Perhaps someone who would stand to gain new students and not have to drive too far, so it wouldn't be too much of a burden.

Can't wait!

Carmen, I don't teach regularly in the area [not yet at least ;) ] but I'd be happy to volunteer and teach an intro or intermediate class before the night gets started.

Also, I guess I too got caught in a spam filter - I tried to email you through swing talk that I could do a page on your already extant site for making donations to Scotty via PayPal if he has an account.

Hi there,

We thought we'd agreed to start at 7 pm, but I just now saw Ashkenaz' website calendar which indicates doors at 6pm, showtime 6:30. So...I'll get back with ya. Gotta check with Lavay as she's going on first.

thanks for pointing that out!

Okay, Ashkenaz confirmed showtime start of 7 pm. Doors at 6:30, unless otherwise noted.

Trying to have swing dance lesson before bands start, so that would be 6:30 for the lesson...

Get 'em in the door and get 'em dancing immediately!

looking forward to it, more updates later!

We've got more goodies donated! Thanks everyone (see below)! Keep 'em coming. We're planning on keeping the raffles and/or possible live auction brief so we can keep the music happening!

Also look for information in the press from Jesse Hamlin of the San Francisco Chronicle and Paul Liberatore of the Marin Independent Journal, many thanks to them and others for promoting the event.

Here's the latest:

The musicians are coming out of the woodwork to play for Scotty this Sunday. You’ll be listening to the hottest jazz players the Bay area has to offer – players that not only know how to swing, but also work with Santana, Destiny's Child, Tito Puente, Tony Toni Tone, Etta James, Boz Scaggs…the list goes on. And guess what? May is National Cystic Fibrosis Month, so what more do you need to celebrate?

And it looks like Scotty himself will be able to participate, unless his new set of lungs comes in before Sunday night!

We’ll see you out there!

Here is a press blurb from the www.ashkenaz.com website:

Scott Edog Petersen Benefit Dance Concert
Sunday May 18
This event is a rare and special one that brings out the two top Bay Area swing dance bands – Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums and Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers – to share the evening in a medical fundraiser for beloved local saxophonist Scott “Edawg” Petersen, www.scottpetersen.org. Petersen has been a busy player on the local scene, performing in both bands and many others including the Mike Vax big bands and the Stan Kenton Alumni Orchestra, despite suffering from the congenital disease cystic fibrosis. His career has included a long stint with legendary jazz drummer J.C. Heard’s band, and he performed with Hammond organ greats Shirley Scott and Brother Jack McDuff, as well as a who’s who of pop from Aretha Franklin on down. Now the time has come for Petersen to receive a double lung transplant. Tonight’s bands raise money for his operation, joined by special guests.

The Rhumba Bums have been one of the West Coast’s most popular, to say nothing of most entertaining and fun, bands since composer-pianist-leader Steve Lucky assembled the group back in ’94 in the early days of the swing dance revival. The Rhumba Bums continue to play and sing just about the most irresistible dance tunes extant. They mix some well-known ’40s and ’50s jump blues and swing charts with rare and nearly forgotten gems that deserve to be resurrected. The band’s trump card is singer-guitarist Miss Carmen Getit, who offers vocal sparring matches with Lucky and guitar playing that, whether swing, blues, or even some bebop licks, is inspired, fast, and faithful to the genre. In pre-Rhumba Bums years, Lucky discovered Getit (who had played piano before she could read and has played guitar since shortly thereafter), bought Getit her first electric guitar and introduced her to the music of T-Bone Walker, Ruth Brown, and other swing-R&B legends, and they formed a piano-guitar duo in New York City. www.luckylounge.com

Before swing became a national craze, jazz vocal stylist Lavay Smith and her band were making music as sharp and irresistible as her period costumes that recall the pinup girls of the Forties. More than a decade later they are still the Bay Area’s hottest swing attraction, as well as that rarity that sounds as good as it looks. Big, bluesy-voiced Smith has deservedly raked in national attention from network television to NPR, and Johnny Otis proclaims that “she and her band are a breath of fresh air!” Multiple award winners, Smith and her Skillet Lickers present not only the best-dressed but also one of the most exciting shows of East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop dance music, as well as sultry torch songs. www.lavaysmith.com

What a night! Some of the most amazing joyous swinging music I have experienced since moving to the Bay Area 8 years ago. Scotty truly is loved and supported by the local musical/dancing communities. My favorite part of the evening must have been the final uplifting "When The Saints Go Marching In" when Carmen Getit, Lavay Smith, Kim Nalley and Chris Binnings were all singing together, and even Jackie Payne got in for a taste! WOW!

I hope the event raised a lot of $$$ to help Scotty with his upcoming medical expenses. It certainly must have raised his spirits - he was blowing his sax through to the end on the show! :)

Wow,

That was an incredible night. thanks to all the music lovers of our community who came out to enjoy the night and participate in the fundraising.

Here's a wrap-up!

Thanks everybody for a great night in support of Scotty Petersen. We had 232 paid donations at the door generating $2562 for Scotty, over $900 in tickets sold for our “big ticket raffle” items, $294 in the “fiver” raffle (throw a 5 dollar bill or more into the hat, write you name on it, pull a bill later on and the person’s who name is on the bill wins 10% of the kitty with the remaining 90% going to Scotty, in this case $32 went to the winner), $365 in Scott Petersen CD sales. Everybody donated their time, and our only expenses were $853 to the Ashkenaz to cover operating expenses and staff. The Ashkenaz is a non-profit, community organization, presenting bands from around the world. We hope you continue to support this Bay Area treasure. Many people donated directly to Scott, and in the end we raised $4890 for Scotty. Congratulations everybody!

Beyond Sunday’s evening take, the event helped to raise awareness about Scott’s condition. There’s a nice article in the Marin Independent Journal at http://www.marinij.com/ci_9285300?IADID=Se...www.marinij.com, thanks Paul Liberatore. And a blurb in the SF Chronicle, http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...n&sn=002&sc=610, thank you Jesse Hamlin! Thanks to the Byrd of Paradise, DJ at KZSU Radio, Saturday mornings 9 – 12 am, listen live or on the internet, kzsu.stanford.edu , for promoting the show on the air, complete with two interviews with Carmen Getit on the air, plus extended radio play of Scotty solos off various CDs including soulman Howard Tate’s. There are many others who promoted this show on the air and in blogs, and to one another via email. Thank you all, and thank you to those I’m forgetting at the moment! Also folks wanted to donate things at the last minute and we couldn't get to it. And there were people whom I couldn't get around to contacting, and they would have donated too. Thanks to all of you! It took a while for word to get out about Scotty and the event. Many people found out too late to attend, and wrote to ask where they can make further donations.

For those who asked where they can contribute to Scotty?

Whoo-hoo!!!

Scotty's got his lungs. He's recovering right now.

Follow the story and send healing thoughts his way!

Thanks to so many of you who donated and attended the benefit for Scotty last year, and to those who have since so generously sent a little something his way. He's been out of regular work since last March!

He's doing great so far! Check out the progress by following the info below.

Love
Carmen

Subject: saxophonist Scott Petersen's Caring Bridge Website

Hello Everyone,

If you are receiving this e-mail it’s because we think you want to know the latest about our beloved Scotty Petersen. He’s out of surgery!!! And breathing on his new lungs!!!

A website has been started to keep everyone in the loop. This is how you get there.

Use this link www.caringbridge.org , the home page will pop up, go to the left hand side of the page to “Visit a Caring Bridge Website”, then type in the name exactly how it appears here scottpetersen. All lower case letters and no spaces.

You will be asked your e-mail address. Type in that address.

At this point you may be asked to register. It's very simple. You will have to give your first and last name and your zip code. You only have to do this one time.

Then each time you want to pop into the website you can visit Scotty’s CaringBridge site at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/scottpetersen

Once inside the website, on the main page there is a little box to check in the journal area, if you check that box, it will automatically send you an e-mail each time the journal is updated.

We’re planning on updating the website as new things happen. You may visit as much as you like and please leave notes in the guestbook area toward the bottom of the page. I’m sure Scott would love to hear from you.

Yet another admirer of Scotty’s,
Carmen Getit

Oh, that's that's such great news! I was wondering about Scott when I saw you guys in Lafayette, but didn't get a chance to ask. Thanks for the post; that CaringBridge site is awesome! I'll pass the word along.
